Not anymore. Governor Jennifer Granholm is calling for the passage of the FAIR bills (Fair and Affordable Insurance Reform) that would ban unfair credit scoring, provide low income auto insurance to those working for wages that force them to live below poverty level and require insurers to get state approval before they can raise their rates. With the passage of the FAIR bills Michigan representatives hope to put a stop to the current free-for-all that is the Michigan auto insurance system and give drivers the fair representation and opportunity for affordable insurance they deserve.

Apathy And Ampatuan
Most foreigners have claimed that Filipinos are apathetic to the injustices, corruption, poverty and deaths that occur in their country.
Once again I heard this judgment after the appalling Ampatuan massacre in Maguindanao happened. Fifty-seven people dead, mass graves found all because of political rivalry.
I asked other Filipinos about the massacre just to see if they were really apathetic and based on their answers it seemed as if they didn’t care. Some tourist guide even went as far as saying “We city-dwelling folk in the Philippines – those of us in the capital of Manila, about 600 miles northwest of Maguindanao – we like to ignore this kind of trouble.”
Sadly, this is true. “This kind of trouble” may be happening outside the tourist guide’s doorstep and he’ll still want to ignore it – and it does happen outside his doorstep. It doesn’t happen only in Mindanao.
Death and carnage, for whatever reason, happen in the Philippines so commonly that it’s no different from breathing the air and as such people have learned to ignore it.
In 1971, then Public Enemy #1 Bingbong Crisologo razed the whole town of Bantay, Ilocos Sur because of political rivalry. In 1982, because of an unsecure construction environment, numerous workers died trying to build the Manila Film Center, Imelda’s plan to achieve cultural supremacy in Asia. In 1985, the Escalante Massacre in Negros Occidental occurred where more than 20 civilians were gunned down in a rally. In 1987, the Mendiola Massacre occurred with 13 peasants dead and 37 wounded. In the same year, the Lupao Massacre occurred where 17 civilians, including the elderly and children, were used as human shields by the NPA and were killed in a battle between the NPA and the military.
This doesn’t include the consistent news of heads on pikes in Mindanao during the Marcos era, extrajudicial killings that are hardly read in the newspapers, the numerous corpses dumped on E. Rodriguez, we now call C-5, and the uncontrollable ones like the thousands who die because of flash floods.
But just because death is common doesn’t mean that it should be allowed to happen. Granted nothing can be done about force majeure but massacres, extrajudicial killings, poverty – we can do something to prevent this.
Maybe the 57 people who died were 600 miles away from Manila,

but these were not just people. They were 57 Filipinos who died.
Maybe these people died in Mindanao, a place where war has been raging for centuries, where death was a given, 600 miles away from Manila. But the last time I heard, Mindanao was still part of the Philippines.
Maybe we were all trained to ignore this barbarism because of 20 years of Martial Law where to have spoken or to have complained meant incarceration. But it’s been more than 20 years since Martial Law and people should no longer be afraid to act, to contest, to complain and instead demand some change.
Politics through violence cannot be tolerated any longer.
Remember, this massacre happened to Filipinos. It could happen to Filipinos in any part of the Philippines. Remember, Mindanao is still part of our country. And remember, 600 miles is really not that far.

LINDON, Utah – Police said thieves must’ve used heavy equipment to make off with a 4-ton statue mounted outside a Utah motorcycle shop. Lindon Police Chief Cody Cullimore said a back-hoe or a crane likely was required to move the $100,000 sculpture depicting an old-time speed racer. Employees discovered it was missing from the Timpanogos Harley-Davidson store in Lindon, where it had been erected two years ago.
Store manager Kandi Zamora said the granite block on which it was mounted also was missing.
